Here at Nature Safe Fertilizers, our minds are on one thing most of the time: environmental sustainability. We make our products with a passion not just for sustainable and organic agriculture but for regenerative practices that go beyond growing profitable crops and lush turf grass.
Our practices are the reason we get so excited about Earth Day. Let’s discuss what we’re doing to make the world greener this April 22nd.
The very first Earth Day occurred in 1970. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson had long been a conservation advocate. In 1969, a massive oil spill in California prompted Senator Nelson to take action. He recruited Senator Pete McKlosky and activist Denis Hayes to organize teach-ins on college campuses in Wisconsin on April 22nd.
Hayes took things to the next level by using his network to create a national event, and organized almost 100 events nationwide. Word spread, and Earth Day 1970 saw 20 million Americans demonstrating in the streets and protesting against the destruction of the environment.
As they say, the rest is history. Earth Day 1970 is directly responsible for the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. And since its inception, Earth Day has inspired millions to advocate for their planet’s health and future and has led to the tremendous growth in organic crop production and regenerative agriculture.
That same environmentalist spirit lives in Nature Safe today. We believe that effective agricultural practices and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive. Here are some ways that we help the environment year-round.
The ingredients in Nature Safe Fertilizers are sourced from animal by-products and rendered animal proteins. Humans typically only consume meat from about 50-70% of an animal, but the rest is still nutrition-filled. Darling Ingredients, Nature Safe Fertilizer's parent company, is recognized as a global sustainability leader, repurposing approximately 15% of the world's meat industry waste streams into value-added products.
Darling takes these inedible by-products and creates feather, blood, meat and bone meals that are then used by Nature Safe to formulate a family of organic fertilizers that deliver complete nutrition to plants and the organisms in the soil. This holistic approach creates a rich and healthy soil ecosystem.
If these ingredients sound familiar to pet owners and animal lovers, they probably are. We utilize the same extensively researched and proven science of animal nutrition and apply that same expertise to soil and plant fertility. The result is a healthy, robust ecosystem that promotes consistent and controlled nutrition over an extended period of time.
Healthy, well-fed soil helps sequester carbon from the atmosphere. That carbon, in turn, improves soil structure and is a necessary element for organisms and plants. When you use no-till regenerative and/or organic farming practices, you also act against climate change. In essence, you’re helping protect one of Earth’s most vital resources - top soil. Nature Safe in turn, is the ideal food source for that resource, which results in a thriving ecosystem in the soil.
Organic farming requires growers to be selective about their inputs. The Organic Materials Review Institute, or OMRI, reviews and lists organic inputs such as fertilizers. They ensure these materials are free of harmful ingredients that pollute the air and water and are compliant with the USDA’s National Organic Program’s (NOP) guidelines.
Nature Safe Fertilizers offer an extensive family of OMRI listed formulations that are also registered with CDFA/OIM (California’s Organic Input Materials) and WSDA (Washington state’s) organic programs. When organic growers are looking for a results oriented fertilizer line that helps them grow – Nature Safe is the natural choice for soil and plant fertility.
Regenerative and Organic Agriculture is a farming methodology that aims to repair and replenish the land and protect the soil. While organic fertilizer isn’t a prerequisite for regenerative agriculture, it’s a compliment to the principles behind it. When transitioning from a conventional farm to regenerative farming practices, soil health is critical and organic fertilizers can go a long way to improving the health and vitality of this most precious resource.
Nature Safe and the regenerative ideology as well as the continual growth in organic crop production share the same goal: to improve the soil’s ability to feed the plant and enhance both nutrient and water management and utilization. The nutrition delivered by Nature Safe helps soil microbe populations explode. This enrichment not only makes crops healthier, but it also significantly improves the soils ability to retain and utilize another of our world’s most precious resources - water.
This Earth Day, think about the steps you want to take to be an advocate for a healthier planet. We’re proud to take steps daily to be environmental stewards while helping growers nationwide achieve their goals.
